Vegetation Mapping Technician

NSR is seeking a remote sensing mapping technician for an immediate, full-time position in McClellan, Sacramento County, CA.

Candidates must have experience and knowledge of forest vegetation types in California, including experience in identifying common tree/shrub species. The position involves office work (65%) in aerial photo interpretation of life form and vegetation types, and on-screen editing of remote sensing based maps derived from LANDSAT TM imagery. General knowledge of computer use is required for accessing and using software such as file management systems, word processing, spreadsheets, and GIS (Arc View). Work requires field visits (35%) to remote areas of the state to make field observations and/or take measurements of vegetation attributes such as species, height, canopy cover, tree diameter, tree crown ratio, and vegetation conditions. At field locations, individual must be able to accurately record vegetation, slope, aspect, elevation, and other data, and must be able to find locations using 7.5-minute USGS quads and/or photos. Familiarity with GPS data is also required.

Minimum requirements: Technician-level experience in forestry or vegetation mapping, proficiency in computer applications, ability to work well with others, attention to detail. Minimum of A.A. in GIS with forestry, natural sciences, or related field preferred. Minimum one year field experience in forest mensuration is preferred.
