Fishery Technicians

Required knowledge and skills:

Fishery Technicians participate in fishery investigations, aquatic habitat inventory and monitoring projects, and environmental assessments. Activities include collecting and compiling data related to fishery and other aquatic resources; and field data collection of various habitat and ecological parameters affecting aquatic biota. Individuals are required to work both independently and as a team member under the supervision of a lead scientist. They work cooperatively with federal, state, and local agencies and private landowners in collecting physical, biological, and water quality data; measuring and recording fishery, stream, limnological, and weather data; trapping, handling, and identifying fish and invertebrates; spawning fish and caring for incubating eggs and fry; fishery equipment maintenance and repair, and fish marking, tagging and fish transport.

Minimum requirements:

Academic training in biological sciences or natural resource management is required, with various university-level courses in biology, ecology, fish and wildlife sciences. Good verbal and written communication skills are required. Applicants must have a demonstrated understanding of scientific methodology, familiarity or experience with biological field data collection, computing and statistical techniques, computer skills, and basic mechanical and electronic skills. A demonstrated familiarity or experience with fish monitoring technologies (e.g., sampling techniques, electrofishing, direct observation, traps, sonar, video) is preferred. Boat handling, navigating skills, and swimming competency are preferred. The ability to conduct field work requiring moderate to heavy physical exertion is necessary and applicants must be comfortable working in, on, and around streams and lakes with proper protective equipment. Because much of the work is outdoors, persons must be capable of, and comfortable with, working in inclement weather. Work may involve more than 40 hours per week on occasion, weekends as needed, and some work during night hours.
